The Gulls - CHalk.
On Friday 22nd May I got to see The Gulls live at Chalk in Brighton alongside one of my bestest friends. To be completely honest, this is a band I didn’t really know much about going into the gig. I did listen to a few of their songs before attending the gig but for me this is one of those bands that actually sound better live, but I will go into that a bit more later down the post.
The Gulls were the support act for the headline band ‘The Big Push’ which is the main reason we attended the gig as this was a huge bucket list band for both me and my friend, however of course like true gig goers, we secured a good to support the support act and I must say I was quiet surprised.
I don’t quiet know what I envisioned the band to look like, but they looked nothing like I thought they would. They looked very rock n roll and in the best possible way. They have what I like to call the ‘I’m good at what I do and I know it’ look and yeah they really are good at what they do. Not only do they write good music and play it very well, they also KNOW how to entertain a crowd and keep them hyped up. I’ve seen my fair share of bands live now but honestly this band are probably up there with one of the best at keeping the crowd rowdy.
Onto their music…the guitarist was absolutely insane and was a very pleasant suprise - he knew how to pluck those strings. The drummer not only hit the beat, he also had absolutely incredible vocals and I must admit it was very refreshing to see the drummer have their moment in the spotlight. The front mans vocals were absolutely phenomenal and at one point he did this thing where he did what sounded like some growls and than a bit of a scream and the slightly feral side of me went absolutely crazy for it. And as for the bassist…well…all I’ll say is that those bass strings aren’t the only strings he knows how to play. As a band overall though, their sound was absolutely incredible and they had a very high energy vibe. The frontman had multiple dance breaks during the instrumental segments and it had me giggling away to myself because I absolutely LOVE that kind of energy. A personal favourite from their setlist for me though definitely has to be ‘Rubber Ducky’. This song is very cheeky and slightly naughty and I am absolutely here for it - and the feral side of me was absolutely in her element. Asking for a friend though…how does one acquire this so called ‘rubber ducky tub of love’ because that sounds like a lot of fun. There music definitely has a certain tone to it and not gonna lie…I am absolutely here for it. The phrase I would use to describe their music would probably be ‘baby making music’ if you know what I mean…
Overall though I absolutely LOVED their set and had an absolute blast. The only downsides were 1) the crowd - we were being pushed here, there, and everywhere and there was no respect for us tiny ladies and 2) the fact I was literally fighting for my life trying to cope with food poisoning (thanks mcdonalds). But hey, I managed to get through the set without chucking up so the score is Kate 1 - Sickess 0.
Until next time fellow concert lovers - up next - The Big Push.
And to the lovely readers who had sent me a DM saying that they live vicariously through my grid posts - stay tuned because this summer is about to be absolutely WILD.
